Tools You Will Need

  • 4mm Allen Wrench / Hex Key (Often needed for aftermarket hardware)
  • Panel Popper Tool (To safely remove wiring harness clips from the factory air box)
Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor on the 5.7L Vortec is directional. There is an arrow molded into the plastic housing. If you install this backward, your C/K 2500 will idle rough and throw a Check Engine Light immediately. Also, the radiator fan shroud plastic on these 90s trucks is extremely brittle due to age and heat cycles—do not lean on it, or it will crack.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory Vortec Intake

  1. Disconnect the Battery: On these GMT400 trucks, use a 5/16" wrench (or 8mm) to disconnect the negative battery terminal. This resets the ECU fuel trims while you work.
  2. Unplug the Sensors: Locate the MAF sensor connector and the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor near the air box. Depress the locking tabs and pull the plugs gently. Do not pull by the wires. Use a panel popper to pry any plastic wire loom clips off the intake tube.
  3. Remove the "Vortec Hat": Loosen the wing nut or 10mm nut securing the factory resonator box (the "Hat") that sits directly on top of the throttle body.
  4. Loosen Clamps: Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp connecting the MAF housing to the air box and the intake tube to the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Assembly: Pull the intake tube free. Unbolt the factory air box base using your 10mm socket and extension. Lift the entire assembly out of the engine bay.
  6. Salvage the MAF: Loosen the clamps holding the MAF sensor housing to the factory accordion tube. Remove the MAF housing completely. Handle this delicately; the internal wires are fragile. Wipe the sealing surfaces clean.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake Kit Matte Black/Red

  1. Prepare the Heat Shield: Assemble the new metal heat shield using the provided hardware and a 10mm socket. Install the rubber weather stripping along the top edge to seal against the hood. Drop the shield into the factory mounting points and tighten it down.
  2. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Place the silicone reducer coupler onto the throttle body. Secure it with a hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver, but leave it slightly loose for adjustment.
  3. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Install the factory MAF sensor housing into the new intake setup using the supplied silicone couplers. CRITICAL: Ensure the airflow arrow points toward the engine (away from the filter). Tighten the clamps snug, but do not overtighten or you may crack the plastic housing.
  4. Insert Intake Tube: Slide the new matte black pipe into the couplers. Align the tube so it does not rub against the radiator hose or fan shroud. Once aligned, tighten all hose clamps securely with your flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket.
  5. Install the Filter: Clamp the high-flow red filter onto the end of the tube inside the heat shield. Ensure it has clearance and isn’t crushed against the fender wall. reconnect the MAF and IAT sensor harnesses.
  6. The Re-Learn: Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the truck. Let it idle for 5 minutes without touching the gas pedal. This allows the ECU to relearn the idle airflow parameters for the increased air volume on your 5.0L/5.7L V8.
