Mechanic’s Pro Tip (The "Gotcha"):
For the Gen 3 BM/BN chassis, the factory Skyactiv MAF sensor screws are notoriously soft and strip instantly. Do not use an old, worn-out screwdriver. Press down firmly with a crisp #2 Phillips screwdriver and turn slowly. Additionally, when transferring the MAF sensor, do not touch the exposed wire element with your greasy fingers, and ensure the factory green O-ring doesn’t pinch, which will cause an immediate vacuum leak and rough idle.

Phase 1: Removing the Factory 2014-2017 Mazda 3 2.5L Intake

  1. Disconnect the Battery: Always start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench or 10mm socket to prevent check engine lights and allow the ECU to reset fuel trims.
  2. Unplug the MAF Sensor: Depress the locking tab on the MAF sensor wiring harness and gently pull it free. Unclip the wire loom from the factory airbox using your panel popper tool.
  3. Remove the Breather Hose: Locate the PCV breather hose attached to the factory rubber intake tube. Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the spring clamp, slide it back, and pull the hose off the fitting.
  4. Loosen the Clamps: Use your 8mm nut driver to fully loosen the hose clamps securing the factory intake tube to the throttle body and to the airbox. Pull the rubber tube off the throttle body.
  5. Extract the Factory Airbox: Remove the two 10mm bolts securing the lower airbox to the chassis using your 10mm deep socket. Firmly grab the bottom airbox and yank straight up to pop it out of the rubber chassis grommets.

Phase 2: Installing the Cold Air Intake for Mazda 3 (2014-2017) 2.5L Engine - Red

  1. Transfer the MAF Sensor: Carefully remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor in the factory airbox using your #2 Phillips screwdriver. Gently pull the sensor out, ensuring the O-ring is intact. Slide it into your new red aluminum intake tube and secure it using the supplied aftermarket Allen bolts and the appropriate hex key.
  2. Mount the Heat Shield: Drop the new heat shield into the space vacated by the factory airbox. Align it with the factory mounting points and tighten it down using your 10mm socket.
  3. Install the Throttle Body Coupler: Slide the provided silicone step-coupler onto the throttle body. Slip two supplied hose clamps over the coupler. Tighten the throttle body side snugly with your 8mm nut driver, but leave the intake side loose.
  4. Seat the Intake Tube: Thread the red intake pipe through the heat shield and slide the top end into the silicone coupler. Once aligned, tighten down the upper hose clamp using the 8mm nut driver. Reconnect the PCV breather hose to the welded fitting on the pipe and secure it with the factory spring clamp using needle-nose pliers.
  5. Mount the Filter and Connect Electronics: Slide the high-flow cone filter onto the end of the red intake tube inside the heat shield. Tighten the filter clamp with your 8mm nut driver. Plug the MAF sensor harness back into the sensor until you hear an audible click.
  6. The ECU Relearn Procedure: Reconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. Start the vehicle but absolutely do not touch the gas pedal for at least 20 seconds. Let the engine idle naturally so the ECU can calibrate to the increased airflow of the Skyactiv 2.5L engine.
